Many customers are surprised by shipping costs, especially when purchasing live plants. We hope the information below provides some helpful background.
Australia Post postage has increased over several years
Australia Post has progressively increased parcel postage rates over recent years for both retail and business customers. For example, the standard retail Small Parcel Post rate has increased from $10.60 several years ago to over $12 today, while Medium, Large and Extra Large parcels have also risen by several dollars over the same period. Similar increases have occurred across Express Post services.
These ongoing postage increases affect every Australian business that ships parcels and are outside the control of individual sellers.
Plants are charged by volumetric weight
Australia Post calculates shipping using the greater of the actual weight or the cubic (volumetric) weight.
Although plants are often relatively light, they are usually tall or wide and require extra room to protect the foliage and root system during transport. As a result, they frequently fall into higher postage categories because of their package dimensions rather than their actual weight.
For example, a parcel measuring approximately 15 cm × 15 cm × 50 cm already occupies enough volume to be charged at a Large Parcel rate, even though the plant itself may weigh well under 1 kg.
Packaging is essential for live plants
Unlike many retail products, live plants require considerably more time and care to prepare for shipping, as every order is individually packed to protect the plant throughout its journey.
