✨ Clean glass isn't necessarily streak-free — the secret is using the right amount of cleaner and finishing with a clean, dry cloth.
Few cleaning jobs look more frustrating than a freshly cleaned window or mirror that somehow has more streaks than it did before you started.
You wipe.
You look from one angle.
There are streaks.
You wipe again.
Now there are different streaks.
And somehow you are wondering whether the glass was cleaner before you touched it!
The good news is that streaky glass usually isn't a mystery. It often comes down to cleaner residue, too much product, dirty cleaning cloths, moisture or the wrong finishing technique.
And as we've discovered throughout our 🧽 Cleaning & Home Care series, the trick isn't always using something stronger.
Sometimes it's simply using less — and finishing better.
Common causes include:
Cleaning guidance from the American Cleaning Institute identifies both excessive/insufficient cleaner and residue on polishing cloths as causes of streaks and smudges on glass.
For ordinary glass and mirrors, try this simple sequence:
🧽 CLEAN → 🧹 WIPE → ✨ BUFF → 🔍 CHECK
The final buff is important because a surface can look clean while still carrying a very thin film of moisture or cleaner residue.
Mirrors are glass — but that doesn't mean you should treat the entire mirror as one big target for spray.
When cleaning a framed mirror, it is better to control where the cleaner goes rather than soaking the edges.
Spraying cleaner directly onto a cloth can help reduce the amount of liquid reaching the frame, edges and surrounding surfaces.
The American Cleaning Institute specifically recommends keeping cleaning product away from mirror frames by applying it to a cloth when appropriate.
💡 Less liquid around the edges = less chance of unwanted residue or moisture where it doesn't belong.
More cleaner does not automatically mean cleaner glass.
In fact, too much product can leave a film that becomes streaks when you wipe it around.
If the glass is only lightly dusty or has a few fingerprints, you may need considerably less product than you expect.
A good rule is:
✨ Use enough to loosen the dirt — not enough to leave the glass swimming in cleaner.
CHOICE's glass-cleaner testing demonstrates that products differ in their ability to clean and avoid streaks, so don't assume that every product will perform identically.
A perfectly good glass cleaner can still produce disappointing results if you use a cloth that is:
For the final finish, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
Our Microfiber Lens, Screen, Glass & Jewellery Cleaning Chamois is designed for fine cleaning and finishing on smooth surfaces and can be particularly useful for the final buff.
Think of the cloth as the tool that removes the last traces of moisture and residue.
If one side of the cloth becomes wet or dirty, don't keep rubbing the same residue back across the glass.
Fold the cloth and move to a clean section.
For a large window or mirror, rotate to a fresh area regularly.
This simple habit can make a surprisingly noticeable difference.
Not every cloudy spot on glass is ordinary dirt.
If water repeatedly dries on a glass surface, dissolved minerals can remain behind and form visible deposits.
You may notice:
These can require a different approach from ordinary fingerprints or dust.
Before using vinegar, acids or a specialist descaler, check that the glass and surrounding materials are compatible with the product.
⚠️ Remember the lessons from BLOG-HK-CLEAN-001 and BLOG-HK-CLEAN-006: a cleaning ingredient that works beautifully on one surface isn't automatically suitable for every surface.
Vinegar is one of the most popular homemade glass-cleaning solutions.
CHOICE has published a simple equal-parts white vinegar and water method for windows and mirrors, followed by wiping with a suitable cloth.
It can be useful, particularly where mineral residue is involved.
But there are two important considerations.
1️⃣ Check the surrounding surface.
Vinegar may be unsuitable for some frames, coatings, natural stone and other nearby materials.
2️⃣ Don't assume vinegar is always necessary.
For ordinary fingerprints and light dirt, a suitable glass cleaner may be simpler and more predictable.
The best cleaning method depends on the actual surface and the type of dirt you're trying to remove.
Large windows can become streaky simply because too much surface is being cleaned at once.
Instead:
This gives you better control and reduces the chance of cleaner drying unevenly on the glass.
If cleaner dries on the glass before you've properly wiped it away, you may end up chasing streaks around the surface.
On hot days or in direct sunlight, this can happen particularly quickly.
If possible, choose a cooler time of day or work on a shaded section.
The aim is simple:
🧴 APPLY → 🧽 WIPE → ✨ DRY
rather than:
🧴 APPLY → ☀️ DRY → 😩 SCRUB
Bathroom mirrors have their own combination of challenges:
For ordinary marks, start with a suitable glass cleaner and a clean microfiber cloth.
For toothpaste or dried product splashes, loosen the residue rather than immediately rubbing hard.
Then clean the remaining film and finish with a dry buff.
Hairspray and other grooming products can leave a surprisingly stubborn film on bathroom mirrors.
If ordinary glass cleaner doesn't remove it easily, don't immediately reach for an abrasive sponge.
Use a cleaning method suitable for glass and follow the product instructions.
Our Multi-Purpose Anti-Bacterial Grease-Resistant Cleaning Cloth can be useful for wiping suitable smooth household surfaces.
For the final stage, switch to a clean, dry microfiber cloth rather than continuing to spread the loosened residue around.
Glass may look hard, but that doesn't mean every glass surface should be scrubbed with an abrasive pad.
In particular, be cautious with:
When cleaning glass, the goal is to remove the dirt without introducing a new problem such as scratching or damaging a coating.
Not every piece of glass is ordinary clear window glass.
Extra care may be needed with:
Always check the manufacturer's instructions for treated, coated or tinted glass before using vinegar, ammonia or other cleaning chemicals.
For example, CHOICE notes that some glass-cleaning products specifically exclude tinted windows from their recommended surfaces.
This is particularly important when moving from mirrors and windows to electronic screens.
A phone, tablet, monitor or television may have coatings that should not be treated like ordinary window glass.
So don't automatically carry your favourite window-cleaning recipe across to your electronics.
That's a perfect example of the principle we've been building throughout this series:
🔍 Identify the surface first. Then choose the cleaning method.
Once you think the glass is clean, take a fresh section of your microfiber cloth and give it a final dry polish.
Work gently until the glass feels dry and looks uniformly clear.
If you see a streak:
Don't immediately add more cleaner.
Try buffing it with the clean, dry part of the cloth first.
You may simply be looking at a tiny amount of moisture or residue that needs to be removed.
Glass can look perfect from one angle and streaky from another.
After cleaning, change your viewing angle or look across the surface rather than straight at it.
Natural side lighting can reveal marks that are difficult to see head-on.
If you find a streak, identify whether it is:
Then treat the actual problem instead of simply repeating the entire cleaning process.
| Problem | What to Try |
|---|---|
| 🖐️ Fingerprints | Suitable glass cleaner + clean microfiber cloth |
| 🌫️ General haze | Remove cleaner residue and finish with a dry buff |
| ✨ Streaks | Use less product and buff with a clean, dry cloth |
| 💧 Water spots | Use a suitable mineral-deposit method after checking surface compatibility |
| 🧴 Sticky residue | Loosen with a suitable cleaner rather than scrubbing aggressively |
| 🪞 Mirror marks | Control moisture around edges and finish with a dry microfiber cloth |
| 🪨 Heavy mineral deposits | Use a manufacturer-approved or glass-safe descaling method |
| 🔍 Scratched glass | Cleaning will not normally remove a scratch — don't scrub harder |
| Stage | Best Approach |
|---|---|
| 🧽 Initial clean | Soft, clean cloth or suitable glass-cleaning tool |
| 💧 Removing moisture | Clean microfiber cloth |
| ✨ Final buff | Dry microfiber finishing cloth |
| 🚫 Dirty cloth | Don't use — it can redistribute residue |
Our Microfiber Lens, Screen, Glass & Jewellery Cleaning Chamois is particularly suited to the final finishing stage on suitable smooth surfaces.
For mirrors, glass doors and frequently touched glass surfaces, you don't always need a full deep clean.
Sometimes the answer is simply:
🧽 WIPE → 💧 REMOVE RESIDUE → 🌟 DRY BUFF
A quick clean with a fresh cloth can prevent fingerprints and small marks from building into a much bigger job.
Our cleaning series has now taken us through quite a few different surfaces:
And glass adds another useful lesson:
✨ Sometimes the cleaning product isn't the problem — the residue left behind is.
Use the right amount of cleaner, use a genuinely clean cloth and give the surface a proper final dry buff.
That is often the difference between clean glass and beautifully clear glass.

Because your television, computer monitor, tablet and phone may all look like glass — but they definitely shouldn't all be cleaned like a window!
Always check the manufacturer's instructions for treated, coated, tinted or specialty glass.
Never spray cleaning liquid directly into electrical equipment, openings, buttons or connections.
Never mix household cleaning products.
When using vinegar or another acidic cleaner, make sure the glass, coating and surrounding materials are compatible first.
When in doubt, use the manufacturer's recommended cleaning method rather than experimenting with a stronger DIY solution.
