✨ Less scrubbing, more sparkling — the secret is keeping the glass dry.
A sparkling shower screen can make the whole bathroom look cleaner, but shower glass has a frustrating habit of becoming cloudy again soon after you've cleaned it.
That cloudy appearance can come from several different things:
The good news is that you don't always need to scrub harder.
The most effective approach is to identify what you're trying to remove, use the gentlest suitable method, and prevent the residue from building up again.
🚿 Shower → 🧽 Squeegee → ✨ Dry
Keeping the glass dry after showering can make a surprisingly big difference.
A small shower squeegee can quickly remove water from the screen before it evaporates and leaves mineral deposits behind. CHOICE specifically recommends keeping a squeegee in the shower and wiping the screen after showering to help prevent soap scum from setting.
You don't need to make it a major cleaning job. A quick pass over the glass after each shower can save much more scrubbing later.
| What you see | Possible cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 🫧 Cloudy greasy film | Soap, body oils and product residue | Bathroom cleaner or suitable detergent-based cleaner |
| 💧 White spots or cloudy mineral marks | Hard-water deposits | Suitable acidic cleaner such as diluted vinegar |
| 🧴 Streaks after cleaning | Cleaner residue or incomplete drying | Clean water wipe + dry microfibre buff |
| 🦠 Black or dark patches | Possible mould | Targeted mould treatment and improved ventilation |
| ✨ Glass looks clean but dull | Fine residue or water film | Thorough rinse/wipe + clean dry microfibre |
For light water marks and suitable glass surfaces, a simple vinegar-and-water solution can be useful.
You'll need:
Method:
1️⃣ Mix the vinegar and water in a clean spray bottle.
2️⃣ Spray lightly onto the glass or onto your cloth.
3️⃣ Allow a short dwell time so the solution can work on suitable mineral deposits.
4️⃣ Wipe with a clean microfibre cloth.
5️⃣ Wipe again with clean water if required.
6️⃣ Finish by drying and buffing with a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
💡 Don't leave a homemade acidic solution sitting on fittings or surfaces just because it seems to be working. Rinse or wipe away appropriately and always consider the manufacturer's care instructions.
This is where many homemade cleaning recipes become less impressive.
Soap scum is not simply a mineral deposit. It can contain soap, oils, skin residue and other bathroom grime, so an acidic vinegar solution isn't necessarily the best answer for a heavy build-up.
CHOICE testing of bathroom cleaners specifically looks at how well products remove soap scum, and notes that bathroom-specific cleaners can have advantages because they are formulated for challenges such as soap scum and mould.
For light everyday residue, a suitable multi-purpose or bathroom cleaner may be sufficient. For heavy, established soap scum, a purpose-formulated bathroom cleaner may save considerable time and effort.
💡 Homemade doesn't automatically mean better — sometimes the right purpose-made cleaner is simply the easier tool for the job.
If there is a stubborn mark on the glass, don't immediately reach for the harshest abrasive you can find.
Start gently:
① Apply a suitable cleaner.
② Give it a little time to work.
③ Wipe with a suitable cleaning cloth.
④ Repeat if necessary.
⑤ Only then consider a more targeted cleaning tool.
Evercare's 🧽 Multi-Purpose Stain Removing Cleaning Sponge can be useful for suitable stubborn marks, but it should be used with care. Test first on an inconspicuous area and use gentle pressure, particularly on delicate, polished or coated surfaces.
Once you've cleaned the glass, don't keep spraying more cleaner because you can still see streaks.
Sometimes the missing step is simply drying and buffing.
Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth and work across the glass until:
Evercare's ✨ Microfiber Lens-Screen-Glass-Jewellery Cleaning Chamois is particularly suited to this type of finishing work on appropriate smooth surfaces.
If you want to spend less time deep-cleaning your shower, try this simple routine:
After every shower:
🚿 1. Squeegee the glass.
💧 2. Remove obvious water droplets from the lower areas.
🌬️ 3. Leave the bathroom ventilated so moisture can escape.
Once a week:
🧽 Clean the glass and surrounding surfaces properly.
✨ Dry and buff the glass.
Whenever needed:
💧 Treat mineral deposits before they become a thick, stubborn layer.
🦠 Deal with mould at the first signs rather than allowing it to spread.
Mould is a different cleaning problem from ordinary soap scum or water marks.
It can appear around:
Small areas may sometimes be manageable with appropriate household mould-cleaning methods, but established mould in silicone or grout can be particularly difficult to remove completely because mould can grow into these porous materials. CHOICE notes that deeply established mould in grout or silicone may require re-grouting or replacement of silicone rather than endless surface cleaning.
⚠️ If mould is extensive, repeatedly returns despite cleaning, or covers a large area, consider getting professional advice.
A bathroom that stays damp will generally be harder to keep clean.
After showering:
CHOICE also recommends ventilation and reducing moisture as part of preventing bathroom mould from returning.
Vinegar is useful for some mineral deposits, but it is acidic and should not be treated as a universal bathroom cleaner.
Take particular care with:
Always check the manufacturer's care instructions before using vinegar or another homemade acidic cleaner.
If you're unsure, test a small hidden area first.
Most importantly:
🚫 Never mix bleach with vinegar or other acidic cleaners.
This can produce dangerous chlorine-containing gases.
Also avoid mixing different commercial bathroom cleaners unless their manufacturers specifically say that they are compatible.
More chemicals do not necessarily mean more cleaning power.
| Cleaning stage | Useful tool |
|---|---|
| 🧽 Everyday cleaning | Multi-Purpose Anti-Bacterial Grease Resistant Cleaning Cloth |
| 🧽 Stubborn suitable marks | Multi-Purpose Stain Removing Cleaning Sponge |
| ✨ Final glass polish | Microfiber Lens-Screen-Glass-Jewellery Cleaning Chamois |
| 🚿 Daily prevention | Shower squeegee |
💡 Remember: A cleaning tool should suit the surface. Don't assume a product described as multi-purpose is appropriate for every material or finish.
| Problem | Quick approach |
|---|---|
| 💧 Water spots | Try a suitable diluted acidic cleaner and wipe thoroughly |
| 🫧 Light soap residue | Use a suitable bathroom or multi-purpose cleaner |
| 🧴 Heavy soap scum | Use a purpose-formulated bathroom cleaner if needed |
| ✨ Streaks | Use less cleaner, then dry and buff with clean microfibre |
| 🦠 Mould | Treat promptly and improve ventilation; extensive mould may need professional attention |
| 🚿 Preventing build-up | Squeegee after showering |
| ⚠️ Unknown surface | Check manufacturer instructions and patch-test first |
Don't wait until the shower screen looks dirty.
A quick squeegee after each shower can take less than a minute, while removing a thick layer of dried soap scum and mineral deposits can take considerably longer.
🚿 Keep it dry → 🧽 Clean gently → 💧 Rinse/wipe → ✨ Dry and buff.
That simple routine can make your shower screen easier to maintain and reduce the need for heavy scrubbing.
